“I signed up To Sarah’s eight week block after I attended one of her nutrition talks and I found it really inspiring. I wanted to give it my best shot, so thought this would be the best programme for me.Sarah is very easy to talk to and she went through my routine and foods I liked to Include already in my diet. I really like her ethos which was to incorporate food I eat rather than give me a meal plan, as I know from previous times I’ve tried to lose weight this has never worked.Sarah also really encouraged me to eat more mindfully and plan ahead what I was going to eat. Where I was before the course?

As a busy working mum I struggled to find the time to time to "do everything".  I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be "perfect" at everything - whether that is being a mum, wife, looking after our home, caring for others, working, cooking etc and consequently I was always putting myself last.  This can make us feel so overwhelmed.  

As a result of a busy lifestyle, my nutrition had slipped and I was gaining weight.  I would have grabbed quick convenience meals and didn't eat at regular intervals....and often eating out of habit rather than being actually hungry, e.g. those biscuits with a cup of tea!  I was struggling to lose the extra few pregnancy pounds.

Where I am now?

Since beginning this course I have lost 11lbs and 25cm by focusing on nutrition, mindset and mood management.  I have learnt to stop focusing on scale weight as it can be frustrating when you don't see any movement in the scales, especially if you have been so focused.  I also track my daily calorie intake and portion size - something I hadn't previously done and hence resulted in weight gain.  With Sarah's advice and support I realised that I was limiting fats - which are essential for energy so I have been introducing healthy fats into my diet.  

I have also realised that I need to make time for "me" and have learnt new strategies in how to manage low mood and stress.  Previously I would have felt guilty about taking time for myself but I now realise this is essential and is now becoming part of my routine.  I now realise the importance of stress management!

With a busy lifestyle I don't have time to go to the gym for cardio sessions so this course fitted in so well - I was learning new techniques and strategies for weight loss at home, at a time convenient to me.

Biggest 3 Wins:

1.  Nutrition - I have increased my protein, hydration and I now track my calorie counting.  I have added protein into my existing meals and this helps me stay fuller for longer - and reduces snacking.  I also found that I wasn't really hungry - I was thirsty and so by increasing my water intake this has helped me to stop snacking on less healthy food.

2. I learned new strategies and techniques in mood management which have helped me immensely and I have been putting these into practice.  One of these is getting enough sleep!  If I don't get enough proper sleep I realise this has an effect on my mood and appetite.  I now also practise mindful eating!

3. This is not a "diet" - it is about learning new lifestyle changes and how these have a positive impact on my energy and mood which will result in long term habits and maintain weight loss.  I know that it is ok to enjoy meals out, events etc as I have come to realise that if I practice the new skills and techniques then these will not have a long term effect on my weight loss efforts.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Food and Mood Freedom Academy.  It worked for my lifestyle, I was able to fit the modules in at a time that worked best for me.  Sarah is an amazing coach - the support and advice that she gives to each client is brilliant.  You can  tell she really cares about how you are doing, your progress and is on hand to provide emotional support when you are feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, which helps to keep you motivated.  She has a wealth of knowledge and expertise and able to provide extra help if you need it.  I have realised that food and mood are linked together and even if every day may not be perfect, the goal is to continually improve for long term success.” - Lisa


Energy:

Before the Academy: was quite low

Now: now energy is ‘through the roof’ and have plenty of energy for training too.

Sleep:

Before the Academy: not great and binge eating causes it and is caused by it.

Now: definitely has improved after being a chronically bad sleeper and I have changed how I approach sleep so that I can ensure better quality/longer duration of sleep.

Mood:

Before the Academy: was low/flat/stressed.

Now: now less depressed and more confident in my ability to cope with stress and life.

Activity: steps and gym were less regular > now much more frequent and getting stronger/fitter

Nutrition: Need to eat more fibre and fruit/veg, need to hydrate more often, going over calories >

Now generally sticking to my calorie deficit, hydration is on point, fibre is great, diet is much healthier and balanced. Hydration better too.

Stress management/self-care:

Before the Academy: not very good at stress management or self-care

Now: I make time for me, set healthy boundaries, I have specific strategies for reducing stress and increasing self-care like journaling, self-soothingand as such I have a much more positive outlook. 

Mindset

Before: Want to feel healthier and stronger, want to be able to fit into my clothes

Now: I feel so confident, less stressed, more focused, feel so much better in clothes and I am more aware of my triggers so that I can pre-empt and manage them.

Relationship with food:

Before the course: ‘It has never been good, I tend to binge-eat sometimes in secret’

Now: “ I have a much healthier relationship with food now and I understand my behaviours around food, so that now I can identify old patterns and act in spite of them. I am also more mindful in general and in my eating so instances of emotional eating are minimal now."
